UConn, Ogwumike, Lynx among espnW's 2016 IMPACT 25 honorees

The University of Connecticut Huskies, the Minnesota Lynx, and WNBA MVP Nneka Ogwumike all made it to espnW's 2016 IMPACT 25 honorees list.

The UConn Huskies were included mainly for their success in college basketball, having won four straight NCAA titles with head coach Geno Auriemma and four-time champion Breanna Stewart leading the way.

Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike did not only win the MVP award, but she also helped the Sparks win the 2016 WNBA title. She was also named President of the WNBA Players' Union.

The Lynx were recognized for being influencers as they used sports as a platform to get messages regarding important social issues across.

The Lynx spearheaded in-game protests in the WNBA, making sure that the voices of gun violence victims won't go unheard.

The espnW Woman of the Year, an annual distinction, shall be chosen from the honorees and shall be announced on December 13.

In 2014, then San Antonio Stars point guard Becky Hammon was named Woman of the Year. Hammon became the first full-time NBA assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs as she accepted the job right after her retirement from the WNBA.
