NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said on Tuesday during a Board of Governors' meeting that he encourages players to speak out about "issues (that are) important to them."
Via Mike Matvey of the New York Daily News:
"I am absolutely in favor of players speaking out and speaking from the heart about whatever issues are important to them. It’s how this country operates.
I’ve had this direct conversation with many of our players."Members of the Minnesota Lynx wore statement shirts in their game against the Dallas Wings last Saturday to protest the recent deaths due to violence.
New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony also took to social media his stand against the recent deaths last week, while encouraging his fellow athletes to use their influence to take charge.
"I'm calling for all my fellow ATHLETES to step up and take charge. Go to your local officials, leaders, congressman, assemblymen/assemblywoman and demand change. There's NO more sitting back and being afraid of tackling and addressing political issues anymore. Those days are long gone. We have to step up and take charge. We can't worry about what endorsements we gonna lose or whose going to look at us crazy. I need your voices to be heard. We can demand change. We just have to be willing to. THE TIME IS NOW. (I'm) all in. Take Charge. Take Action. DEMAND CHANGE."Per Jon Krawczynski, Silver prefers players to use other platforms to speak out on issues. Silver also noted that while he wants players to follow the dress code, he do acknowledges it is a "slippery slope."
