Storm's Breanna Stewart wins 2016 WNBA Rookie of the Year award

To no one's surprise, Seattle Storm rookie Breanna Stewart won the 2016 WNBA Rookie of the Year award, the league announced on Thursday.

Stewart, the no. 1 overall pick of this year's draft, averaged 18.3 PPG, 9.3 RPG, and 1.9 BPG, topping all rookies in those categories as she was also consistently a part of the MVP race. The 6-foot-4 forward also broke Lisa Leslie's record for most defensive rebounds in a single season with 277.

Surprisingly, Stewart wasn't a unanimous choice. She did receive 38 votes from a national panel of 39 sportswriters and broadcasters. San Antonio Stars guard Moriah Jefferson was the only other rookie to receive a vote.

Stewart's win as this year's ROY marks the first time in league history that two players from the same team won ROYs in back to back years. Jewell Loyd won in 2015.

Stewart and Jefferson made it to the 2016 WNBA All-Rookie team along with Dallas Wings forward Aerial Powers, Indiana Fever guard Tiffany Mitchell, and Chicago Sky center Imani Boyette.

The award capped a big year for Stewart, which included an Olympic old medal and the Best Female Athlete award at the ESPYS.
