The United States and Canada stayed perfect in Group B of the 2016 Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after wins over Serbia and Senegal, respectively. Spain, meanwhile, weathered a brave challenge from China to rise to 2-1 in the team standings.
Here is the August 10 round-up of the 2016 Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
SPAIN 89, CHINA 68
Alba Torrens came up big once again, scoring 32 points on 15-for-25 shooting as Spain prevailed against a brave Chinese side, 89-68.
Spain was leading by just 66-61 in the fourth quarter when the team closed the game on a 23-7 run. Spain outscored China, 25-9 in the entire fourth period.
China gave Spain a good challenge in the first half, leading by as much as seven points though Torrens kept Spain in the game before her side finally took control in the third period.
Torrens added eight rebounds and four assists. Astou Ndour finished with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting while Leticia Romero shined again, scoring 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 clip.
Spain held a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint, and shot 53.6 percent overall, compared to only 43.1 percent for China.
Shao Ting had 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting for China while Chen Xiaojia added 11 points and six assists.
UNITED STATES 110, SERBIA 84
Diana Taurasi led the United States for a third consecutive game as the defending gold medal winners blitzed past Serbia to remain perfect in the group phase.
Taurasi tallied 25 points including 6-for-10 from three-point area in less than 24 minutes and dished out six assists. Four others scored in double-digits for USA, including Breanna Stewart who had 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Tina Charles had 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
USA opened the game on a 11-2 run but it wasn't until the second quarter when the team grabbed control of the match. Back to back triples from Taurasi and Maya Moore, followed by three more free throws from Taurasi pushed the lead ahead to 49-30. USA took a 56-34 lead entering the halftime break, and never looked back.
USA shot 53.5 percent overall, although Serbia shot better from three-point range at 12-for-20. USA assisted 30 of 38 field goal makes and made all 26 free throw attempts.
Danielle Page, Sonja Petrovic, and Jelena Milovanovic all had 15 points for Serbia, which fell to 0-3. The EuroBasket winners will have a relatively easier schedule though, with their remaining games up against Senegal and China.
CANADA 68, SENEGAL 58
Kia Nurse had 14 points and two steals while Tamara Tatham added 13 points and 10 boards as Canada edged Senegal to likewise stay unbeaten in Group B.
Senegal scored the game's first five points, but Canada answered with a 16-3 run to end the first quarter holding a 17-10 lead. Though Canada was never able to pull away, the team maintained separation until the end of the match.
Canada had 11 more bench points, 28-17 and forced Senegal to commit 23 turnovers, which the FIBA Americas champions converted to 20 extra points.
Astou Traore carried Senegal with a game-high 24 points on 7-for-14 shooting, six rebounds, and four steals. Oumoul Thiam added 12 points including 2-for-5 from long range.
Canada will face Spain on August 14th in a game that will essentially determine who finishes second in the group.
