Canada sweeps China in Edmonton Grads International Classic

The Canadian women's national basketball team completed a three-game sweep of China in the Edmonton Grads International Classic hosted by the Saville Community Sports Centre on Monday.

Canada, the no. 9 team in the world in FIBA's women's rankings, won Game 3, 71-59 with Miranda Ayim and Nirra Fields each scoring 10 apiece to lead the team.

Both Canada and China are preparing for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil. Canada won the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, which was also held in Edmonton, last year to qualify outright. China won one of five Olympic Qualifying Tournament tickets in France earlier this year.

Canada also leaned on Ayim, who tallied 15 points, in Game 2 on Sunday which the team won, 74-62. Nirra Fields added 12 points.

Canada also took the opener on Saturday, 82-63 with Tatham and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe scoring 12 points each.

Shao Ting, Sun Meng Ran, Huang Si Jang, Zhao Zhi Fang, and Chen Xiao Jia all had double-digit outputs for China throughout the series.

Canada's roster for the Edmonton Grads International Classic also included Natalie Achonwa, Kim Gaucher, Ruth Hamblin, Miah-Marie Langlois, Lizanne Murphy, Kia Nurse, Emily Potter, Katherine Plouffe, Jamie Weisner, Adut Bulgak, Shona Thorburn, and Laura Dally.

Both Canada and China are in Group B of the Olympics with Senegal, United States, Spain, and Serbia.

In Group A are Turkey, France, Belarus, Australia, Brazil, and Japan.
