Canada names roster for Rio Olympics; Achonwa, Nurse included

The Canadian women's national basketball team announced on Friday its roster for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil.

Indiana Fever forward Natalie Achonwa headlines the list, which also includes Miranda Ayim, Kim Gaucher, Lizanne Murphy, Michelle Plouffe, Katherine Plouffe, Shona Thorburn, Tamara Tatham, Nirra Fields, Miah-Marie Langlois, Kia Nurse, and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe.

Canada women's basketball team head coach Lisa Thomaidis said:
“We’re extremely proud of these 12 athletes and what they’ve sacrificed and accomplished to get to Rio. We’re ready to take that passion and dedication to the world stage and continue to make Canada proud to support our team.”
Canada will be fielding an experienced and well-constructed group for the Olympics. Seven players in the roster have played in the 2012 London Olympics, and 10 have been in the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.

All 12 participated in the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Edmonton, which the team won. Nurse was hailed MVP of the tournament.

Canada is in Group B of the Olympics alongside reigning gold medalist United States, Serbia, Senegal, Spain, and China.

In Group A are Australia, Belarus, France, Turkey, Japan, and hosts Brazil.
